Au Contraire Winery is located in Sonoma County and was founded by David S. Taub. They describe their wines thus: “Our wines celebrate the spirit of taking on any challenge in life, no matter how insurmountable it may seem. This irresistible joie de vivre is artfully embodied on each Au Contraire label with a playful illustration that turns expectations on their heads.” The outstanding quality of their wines comes from the skill of legendary California enologist Tom Hinde.

The 2014 Au Contraire Pinot Noir is a blend of grapes from several Sonoma Coast vineyards from Sebastopol to the Fort Ross Seaview AVA. These vineyard sites sit above the fog line, and produce a wine that is in a cool climate style with highly concentrated fruit flavors.

Primary fermentation of this wine is in stainless-steel tanks. This is then followed by malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels on fermentation lees, with minimal racking.

The resulting wine is brilliant ruby red, with a nose of cherry, raspberry and plum and notes of violet and spice. On the palate this is an elegant, silky wine, with fine tannins and firm acidity.

Enjoy this wine with duck or pork dishes cooked with fruit. The wine also pairs well with light cheese such as chevre.
