THE 2015 STÉPHANE AVIRON BEAUJOLAIS VILLAGES Stéphane Aviron has adopted an almost radical return to tradition in Beaujolais—sustainable viticulture, extremely old vines and classic Burgundian techniques. His cru Beaujolais drinks like fine Burgundy. Beaujolais has been historically considered “the poor man’s Burgundy.” A modern movement toward fruity, simple, quaffing wines boosted sales but eroded the region’s traditional quality. Stéphane Aviron has reversed the trend. By focusing on the Beaujolais village crus, the best sites for unique, expressive wines, and finding old parcels of vines, Aviron creates very expressive, age-worthy wines relying on traditional and new methods, including organic and biodynamic... 2017 CHÂTEAU CAMPUGET ROSÉ Château de Campuget in Costieres de Nimes is a beautiful wine property dating back to 1640. The soil is typical for the region, with many stones that force roots to find water deep in the lower layers of clay, contributing additional character to the wine. This family property is managed by winemaker Franck-Lin Dalle, named after one of his father’s heroes, Benjamin Franklin. This wine is made from 30% Grenache and 70% Syrah by “bleeding,” a process of running off the juices from the tank. The wine has a short maceration process, 4 to 12 hours,... View Article

2015 LOUIS LATOUR ARDÈCHE CHARDONNAY Maison Loius Latour is considered one of the most innovative producers in Burgundy while still maintaining its traditional image. With a view to expanding their business, the valley of the Ardèche River, with its clay and limestone soils, was chosen in 1979 as the ideal location to produce a top-quality chardonnay. This is an excellent example of how successful this venture has been for Louis Latour. This 100% chardonnay was fermented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats until malolactic fermentation was complete. The wine was then aged in stainless steel for 8 to 10 months before being... View Article
