In Bierzo, Veronica found Mencia, a variety that bears many similarities to both Pinot Noir and Syrah—refreshing acidity, bright fruit flavors, and an affinity for expressing terroir. Alessandra Bodda now runs the estate her great-grandfather founded in 1903, farming 30 hectares of indigenous Piedmontese varieties with the help of her son Emanuele. 2017 HAHN SLH CHARDONNAY The Santa Lucia Highlands Chardonnay is crafted with 98% of the fruit from Lone Oak Vineyard and 2% fruit from Smith Vineyard. The growing conditions were affected by a dry and sunny year for Santa Lucia Highlands, however below average temperatures remained over the region through the end of May and into June. Gusty, northwesterly jet streams caused upwelling of very cold water in the Monterey Bay. This wind and cold water impacted the Salinas Valley day and nighttime temperatures. As most vineyards were in bloom during that period, the cooler temperatures caused an elongation of... View Article
