Join us for an amazing free tasting with Judith Unterholzner, International Sales Director for Kaltern Winery, who has just announced a brief visit to Santa Fe. The Kaltern Winery is located in Italy’s northernmost province of Alto Adige, in the Alps where Italy meets Austria and two cultures merge into one. The vineyards range from 300 to 550 meters above Lake Caldaro, and the single-vineyard wines we’ll be tasting come from well above the valley floor with south-southeast exposure. The mountains surrounding the town on all sides of the vineyards provide cooling breezes in the evenings after the very warm days. The generous soil is limestone and clay based near the lakeside, changing to volcanic limestone higher on the hills. We’ll be sampling these delightful wines:

KALTERN | Pinot Bianco ‘Vial’ DOC 2016
Stainless steel fermentation with 10% aging in large oak casks. Brilliant yellow with nose of pears and ripe Golden Delicious apples, fresh fruit and white peach. Undertones of minerals and flint and hazelnuts.

KALTERN | Gewürztraminer ‘Campaner’ DOC 2015
Alto Adige is considered the home of Gewürztraminer. The Campaner vineyard is on the ridge between the towns of Tramin and Kaltern. Light, golden yellow, intense nose, rose blossoms, lychee, cloves, cinnamon, a hint of sage, this wine is complex and multi-faceted.

KALTERN | Lagrein Classico DOC 2014
This is an indigenous grape of Alto Adige with flavors similar to Cabernet Franc and Syrah. Aged for 6 months in large barrels with 15% in small barrels, it is dark, deep red with aromas of ripe fruit, plums and blackberries and notes of chocolate and coffee.

KALTERN | Pinot Grigio ‘Soll’ DOC 2016
This southeast-facing vineyard at 450 meter is one of the finest single vineyards of Pinot Grigio in Alto Adige. 20% aged in medium barrels. Light straw-yellow color, with sliced apple and ripe pear, hazelnut, honeydew melon and a hint of vanilla of nose. This is a well-balance, light-bodied white with a tang of stony mineral underscoring notes, fresh acidity and fruity finish.

KALTERN | Pinot Nero ‘Saltner’ DOC 2016
This amazing wine comes from a beautiful mountain vineyard of Pinot Noir at 400 meters with southwest exposure that benefits from the late afternoon sun. Twelve months in both small barrels and medium barrels, produces a brilliant ruby-red wine tasting of cherries, violets, and marzipan.

This Pinot Noir is aged for 6 months in large barrels to produce a wine with an appealing cherry-red color that presents on the palette with strawberry, raspberry and cherry flavors with notes of rose-hip tea. This medium-body wine finishes with soft tannins.

KALTERN | ‘Serenade’ Passito DOC 2012
This most famous wine of Kaltern is made from 100% Moscato Giallo. Partially dried on the winery rooftop, this sweet dessert wine is a brilliant golden yellow, with a rich bouquet of exotic fruits, apricots and honey-sweet blossoms. It is complex and intense, creamy and rich, with fresh acidity.
